Its Easy To Give What Isn't Yours
The Civil Government has learned how to fool people into thinking they are generous.
How do they do this?
Easy.
They give out money.
Who's money?
Oohh, now don't go asking that question...why would you want to ruin the moment?
Aaahh, but thats the catch isn't it...its easy to give out money that you didn't slave for and have to accumulate...isn't it?
The Government gets its money from taxes...they take it from one group of people and then make themselves look really generous by giving it to another group of people.
What would really impress me is the government taking the money from their own pockets and giving it out to certain grants or causes...but I won't hold my breath.
As Christians we can fall into this same type of trap.
The tithe means a tenth.
Many Christians don't tithe...for whatever reason.
Some take the money they should have given to their local church [where they are members] and spend it on new cars, clothes or other creature comforts and luxuries.
They steal from God...but boy oh boy their stolen car looks good...and that new stolen suit...top notch.
When the tithe goes to the Church then it is the responsibility of the Church to help out those in need.
If we are faithful in our tithe and want to help out individuals with money above our tithe that is great.
But we shouldn't keep money back from the tithe and use it to give to others.
This can put us in the same shoes as the government.
It can make us look very generous...but with who's money?

Hi Dale,
When one looks at the abismal state of tithing in the church (I have even seen a "ministry" to free people from the slavery of tithing!) and then listen to how much complaining goes on about paying taxes, we can only reasonably conclude that something is seriously wrong. If people are more concerned about if they need to tithe on the gross or if it's okay to tithe only on the net, or if they should tithe at all, or however they justify stealing from God, they shouldn't be surprised by high taxes. Paying to Caesar is obligatory, but when we more willingly pay Caesar than we tithe, then what results is high and sometimes oppressive taxes that go to fund humanistic schools and the like.
You sure nailed it on the head Des.
I can remember going through a course on Christian ethics and politics.
The discussion was on welfare and the abuse thereof.
Most of the students agreed that the abuse of welfare was wrong but not everyone agreed with the teacher when he said that welfare itself is wrong or sinful.
The arguments about helping the single mom and the injured dad came up into the classroom debate...trying to justify the welfare system.
The question was stated that if there wasn't any welfare then this poor people would perish.
The teachers response was that God has appointed the Church to look after the needy...but when the Church becomes consumed with their own comforts and luxuries then God will raise up [as a form of judgment] another to do the job.
This leads to your remark Des, when we cry about high taxes we should really check to see how faithful we are being in giving to God's kingdom.
